Eurovision, a contest held with the aim of global unity through music, has faced political and social challenges. Ireland has announced that it will withdraw for the second consecutive year due to Israel's participation in Eurovision 2026. This withdrawal follows global criticisms and protests regarding the current political situation in the region and the war in Gaza.
Decline in Participation and Viewership
Despite celebrating its 70th anniversary, the 2026 event faced unprecedented reactions. The number of viewers for the contest dropped from 166 million in 2025 to 131 million in 2026. This significant decline is attributed to political protests and dissatisfaction with Israel's participation in the event.

Of the five countries that withdrew from the contest in 2026, Ireland has confirmed that it will not participate in Eurovision again. Other countries, including the Netherlands, Spain, Iceland, and Slovenia, have also expressed their protests. The Netherlands has stated that it will refrain from participating due to the event's lack of neutrality amid military conflicts.
Changes in Eurovision Rules and Policies
Eurovision organizers are attempting to implement changes to voting rules and event management. They announced that a winner who is in a state of insecurity and armed conflict will automatically be disqualified from hosting the next event. This rule specifically aims to prevent Eurovision from being held in Israel.
Additionally, voting is set to be conducted online, and participants will have to choose from their three favorite acts. These changes are intended to reduce political voting and create greater transparency in the winner selection process.
Eurovision is also facing financial challenges, as Spain's withdrawal as one of the major financial supporters has led to a decrease in funding. Nevertheless, organizers are striving to expand the international reach of the brand and work on new projects.
Ultimately, the Eurovision 2027 event will be held in the city of Burgas, Bulgaria. This city is celebrating its hosting of this major event. Milenia Miltenova, the general director of Bulgaria's television network, expressed happiness about the event and emphasized that Bulgaria is ready to host at a high level.
