Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced on Saturday that his personal information has been stolen and published on the dark web. Tajani stated in a message posted on social media platform X that he has been targeted by hackers because they have pressured the Italian government's stance on Ukraine.

Details of the Data Breach

Tajani stated that criminals are "willing to pay for more details about me and my family." He added: "For several days, cyber hackers have been publishing my personal information on the dark web and are looking for additional information, effectively putting me and my family at new threats and intimidation." This Italian minister did not specify what type of information is being published, but it seems that criminal activities against him are ongoing.

Italian Government's Stance

Italy, like other EU and NATO member countries, has provided humanitarian and military aid to Ukraine to continue its defense against the Russian invasion that has lasted nearly five years. Tajani also noted: "I will not allow myself to be pressured in any way. I will continue my work to defend the ministry and Italy, and I will strengthen collaborations to protect ourselves."

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni explicitly stated that "Russian-supporting hackers" are behind this security breach, describing it as a "serious and concerning issue" that must be addressed with determination. Allegations of Russian involvement in the hack against Tajani come as Europe has been affected by numerous so-called "hybrid" attacks likely organized by the Kremlin.

Security and Social Implications

These attacks include airspace violations using drones and sabotage in NATO territories, attacks on food supply, and recently threats against the media, as well as a series of bomb threats that have led to cancellations and rerouting of flights in the bloc. While Italy and other European countries are seeking ways to counter these threats, the situation highlights the severity of cyber threats and the need to strengthen security measures against such attacks.

These events, which clearly indicate the continuation of cyber threats at both national and international levels, demonstrate the need for greater cooperation and solidarity among European countries to address these types of attacks. Tajani and Meloni emphasized Italy's determination to tackle these challenges and stressed the importance of continuing support for Ukraine in this regard.
