Joseph Gordon-Levitt announced at the third annual TIME100 AI Impact Dinner held in San Francisco that large AI companies should be halted by the U.S. government until they can prove the safety of their products.
The Need for Oversight of AI Companies
The actor told guests at the event that today's AI creators have lost control over their products and that more oversight is necessary to prevent potential dangers. He referenced the safety of cars and buildings, stating, "Why are cars safe? Because car manufacturers and builders must follow regulations. And if they don't, the law can stop those companies."

Gordon-Levitt added that AI companies today are acting in a way that the law should stop them. He referred to public admissions by executives and employees of these companies that their products are dangerous and uncontrollable. These statements may allude to the cyberattack carried out in July by a group of OpenAI agents.
Call for Political Action
Gordon-Levitt also pointed out the lack of political action from U.S. politicians, saying they are "scared" and not acting due to receiving money from some of these companies. He urged Americans not to vote for any politician in the November midterm elections who calls for "anything less than strong oversight right now."
Alongside these remarks, other speakers at the event addressed the positive aspects and dangers of AI. Daniel Boyer, an inventor and young activist, uses AI to preserve the endangered language of his people. He told guests, "The decisions we make today about AI will go beyond any individual in this room."
Sushi Sariyah, a computer scientist from Johns Hopkins and founder of Bayesian Health, also shared his experiences in early detection of infections and hospital risks. He emphasized that "breaking the information chain to change a patient's fate" is very important, referencing his company's advancements in using AI.
This event, supported by companies like Deloitte, Booking.com, and Cognizant, examined the impacts of AI on the future and emphasized the importance of oversight and regulations in this field.
