Mark Rutte, NATO's Secretary General, responded to Russia's nuclear threats at a security meeting in Brussels on Wednesday, emphasizing that NATO is a defensive alliance. He said, "We must respond and make it clear to Russia that NATO is a defensive alliance and must stop the war in Ukraine and the nuclear threats because this is not beneficial." Rutte added, "NATO is much stronger than Russia, and there is no way to defeat us."

Increasing Tensions Between NATO and Russia

Rutte's strong statements reflect the rising tensions between Moscow and NATO countries, which are increasing due to hybrid attacks and sabotage related to Russia across Europe. Recently, the Russian embassy in Belgium sent a note to NATO claiming that NATO is exhibiting "reckless and irresponsible behavior" near the Kaliningrad territory. This claim follows NATO military exercises involving several reconnaissance aircraft, ground forces, and fighters near the area.

Nuclear Threats and NATO's Response

In a letter sent to NATO, Moscow explicitly referred to the use of its nuclear arsenal and issued threats to attack the territories of allies. A NATO diplomat, who wished to remain anonymous, referred to the details of this letter and stated that NATO has sent a note to Russian officials in response to these threats.

A summary of NATO's response has been confirmed by the coalition's spokesperson, Allison Hart. She stated, "We have responded and reminded that NATO is a defensive alliance and none of our activities or exercises pose any threat to any part of Russia. We strongly condemn threats to use force, including any irresponsible nuclear rhetoric."

Some NATO members consider these threats insignificant. A NATO diplomat said, "Our analysis is that they want to influence public opinion among allies to stop support for Ukraine while portraying NATO as a potential culprit for military escalation." He described this behavior as "classic Russian propaganda."

Another NATO diplomat also noted that "Russia always accelerates when it has the most guilt or when it is failing." He added, "They are now in a tight spot and are blaming NATO."

The Russian embassy in Belgium did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
