Mohammad Al-Bashir, the Minister of Energy of Syria, elaborated on the country's reform plans during a parliamentary hearing and emphasized the necessity of renovating the Kirkuk-Banias pipeline. He stated that this action could help mitigate the fuel crisis and improve Syria's energy situation.
Challenges in Syria's Energy Sector
Al-Bashir pointed out the significant operational and financial challenges in the energy sector during this session and explained that the reduction of energy resources has led to serious problems in this area. To overcome this crisis, Syria intends to renovate refineries and increase its cooperation with Iraq in oil transportation.

The Minister of Energy of Syria also discussed signing a memorandum of understanding with a consortium of companies to replace the aging Kirkuk-Banias pipeline, stating that this action will not only help secure energy but will also facilitate the use of the Arab gas pipeline and internal networks. According to Al-Bashir, Syria can benefit from transit rights and priority in oil purchases.
Human Resources and Development of Oil Fields
Al-Bashir further mentioned the return of about 10,000 dismissed employees to work, stating that this will help improve the human resources situation and smarten services in the Ministry of Energy. He also announced Syria's entry into negotiations with major international companies for oil and gas exploration and the development of offshore fields.
The Minister of Energy expressed hope that if the plans progress and no emergencies occur, Syria could achieve self-sufficiency in oil by 2028. However, he emphasized that achieving self-sufficiency in the gas sector would require more time.
