Nawaf Salam, the Prime Minister of Lebanon, warned on Friday that a dangerous vacuum may arise in southern Lebanon if no agreement is reached on a new international force. These remarks came following the end of the mission of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Background of the UNIFIL Mission
UNIFIL forces have been stationed in Lebanon since 1978, and their goal is to maintain peace and security in a region that has experienced significant tensions, especially after the 2006 Lebanon-Israel war. These forces were deployed as part of an agreement between Lebanon and Israel to monitor the ceasefire and prevent new conflicts in the area.

Security Concerns
Nawaf Salam referred to security concerns in his statements, saying that the lack of agreement on replacing UNIFIL could lead to increased tensions and conflicts in the region. He added that Lebanon urgently needs international support to protect security and stability in the south of the country.
The Prime Minister of Lebanon also emphasized that local communities must be active in this regard and benefit from ongoing international cooperation. He called for serious attention from the international community to this issue to prevent any humanitarian and security crises in the future.
Consequences of No Agreement
The failure to agree on a new force could have serious consequences for Lebanon and the region. Security experts believe that this situation could lead to increased activities of armed groups and the emergence of new conflicts. In fact, the existing vacuum may exacerbate tensions between Lebanon and Israel and threaten the security of the residents of this area.
Ultimately, Nawaf Salam called on all countries and international organizations to assist Lebanon and prevent the creation of any security vacuum in the country. He particularly emphasized the importance of supporting UNIFIL forces and continuing their mission, stating that these forces play a vital role in maintaining stability in Lebanon.
