Polish officials announced that they are investigating a possible attempt to assassinate Donald Tusk, the Prime Minister of the country, and Włodzimierz Czarzasty, the Minister of Defense. This news was published on Sunday and reflects growing concerns about the security of high-ranking officials in the country.
New Security Measures
Karolina Gałek, spokesperson for the Polish Ministry of the Interior, wrote in a post on social media X that Mariusz Kamiński, the Minister of the Interior, and Tomasz Siemoniak, the Minister Coordinator of Special Services, have ordered security measures to be taken. She noted that these actions were taken following a "possible attempt to assassinate the Prime Minister as well as the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of National Defense."
Police officials, government protection services, and the Internal Security Agency of Poland gathered in an emergency meeting at the agency's counter-terrorism center to assess the situation. Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesperson for Siemoniak, told reporters that officials "take this matter very seriously" and emphasized the importance of security against increasing threats.
Increase in Threats Against Officials
Dobrzyński also stated, "Every month, every year, more alarming threats and messages are reaching the police. In this case, we are talking about a strong possibility that these threats may have been acted upon." No further information about the details of this plot has been released, and it is unclear who might be behind these threats.
Poland is at the forefront of Russia's hybrid war against supporters of Ukraine in Europe and has witnessed cyberattacks attributed to Moscow. In recent weeks, Poland has also seen a wave of violent incidents in schools, including the murder of a janitor in a knife attack.
In this context, concerns about public safety and the security of government officials have increased, and the need for new security measures is felt more than ever. Polish officials have stated that they are examining various aspects of these threats and the necessary actions to protect officials.
