Russia has released an American retired teacher named Stephen Hubbard, who had been imprisoned for over four years on charges of being hired as a mercenary in Ukraine. Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, announced this news during a meeting with Steve Witkoff, a representative of the United States, in Saint Petersburg. Witkoff thanked Putin on behalf of Donald Trump, the President of the United States, during this meeting.
Details of Hubbard's Release
Stephen Hubbard, 74, was sentenced in 2024 to nearly seven years in prison in a penal colony. He was arrested in April 2022, and Russian officials accused him of contracting with the Ukrainian military in the city of Izyum in eastern Ukraine. These charges were raised after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The U.S. Department of State during the Biden administration stated that Hubbard was wrongfully imprisoned in a closed trial.

Political Implications of the Release
Hubbard's release comes as Trump has recently lifted sanctions against Russia to facilitate a controversial deal with Putin and is seeking to reduce fuel prices. Prices have surged significantly due to his war with Iran. Meanwhile, relations between Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, have soured significantly. Zelensky has expressed serious concerns about the fuel deal between the United States and Russia, and Trump announced on October 11 that he had created an "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine.
Zelensky has accused Moscow of violating the apparent agreement and has resumed attacks on Russian oil facilities, disregarding Washington's pressure. Trump has called the new Ukrainian attacks "shameful" and stated that Zelensky is "more difficult than Putin."
