Russia's attacks on Ukraine's data centers seriously threaten the digital infrastructure of the country. Since early September, Russia has systematically targeted these centers, which include physical infrastructure for storing digital information.

Impact of Attacks on Online Services

The digital infrastructure around Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, has been affected by these attacks, and several television channels and streaming services have temporarily been unavailable. Subscribers of some cable networks have also reported difficulties connecting to these services.

Servers and computer systems that are essential for data storage and maintaining online services have been the primary targets of these attacks, as damage to them could have widespread effects across the country. All online systems, including news portals, government registrations, banks, and financial services, require active data centers to function properly.

Response from Ukrainian Officials

Andriy Sybiha, Ukraine's Foreign Minister, stated that Russia has targeted these centers to disrupt the flow of information. He added, "Since Russia is not achieving its goals on the battlefield, it is seeking new ways to destabilize life in Ukraine and intimidate civilians."

Despite the extensive damage caused by Russia's attacks, experts believe that Ukraine is not at risk of a complete internet blackout. Oleksandr Glushchenko, a communications expert, said this is due to the decentralized nature of the industry in Ukraine. He explained that "the government has never had strict control over this industry, and entry into the market has been very easy. This has allowed thousands of businesses to provide their services."

Additionally, Oleksandr Fedyienko, a Ukrainian representative and member of the National Security Committee, wrote on Facebook that Ukraine's internet infrastructure will soon be rebuilt and services will return quickly.

Serhiy Biskrestnov, an advisor to Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, emphasized that Russia's attacks are part of a broader campaign. He said, "They are trying to scare us with claims that we will not have food or fuel, and now with the possibility of losing internet access."

However, Glushchenko emphasized that even if one server is damaged, its information can be retrieved from other data centers that have stored the information. He added that telecommunications companies also have copies of their data with cloud services like Google and Amazon.
