Senators in the United States are working to abolish the annual time changes, but they are facing opposition from some of their colleagues. In less than a month, most states in the U.S. will turn their clocks back an hour, and this cycle of time changes will continue.

Sunshine Protection Act

In July, the House of Representatives passed a bipartisan bill that would make daylight saving time permanent across the United States. This new step is part of a years-long effort to eliminate time changes. President Donald Trump has repeatedly urged Congress to pass this law. However, this bill faces an uncertain future in the U.S. Senate. John Thune, the Senate Majority Leader, recently stated that there is no agreement among his colleagues to advance this bill.

Dissatisfaction with Time Changes

Most countries follow the practice of changing the clocks twice a year; moving one hour forward in March and one hour back in November. This system has faced widespread dissatisfaction. Surveys indicate that most Americans are opposed to these annual changes. Reports suggest that only 12 percent of Americans support these changes.

Additionally, while Americans are divided on whether they want to observe daylight saving time or standard time permanently, 56 percent support permanent daylight saving time, while 42 percent support standard time. Currently, federal law allows states to ignore daylight saving time and remain on standard time; Hawaii and most of Arizona have made this choice.

The bill passed in the House of Representatives is known as the Sunshine Protection Act, and if it successfully passes in the U.S. Senate, it will establish permanent daylight saving time nationwide.

Senator Rick Scott, a strong supporter of this bill, stated in a statement that he hears from people who are tired of the time changes and considers this practice outdated and unnecessary. He believes this change could simplify the lives of American families and give them more time for outdoor activities.

Senator Patty Murray, a Democrat from Washington, has also mentioned the passage of this bill, stating that this action is a clear demand from the American people. She also referred to the early darkening of days in her state and called for necessary changes in this regard.

While the passage of this bill may lead to various benefits, some senators oppose this change for various reasons. They are concerned about its adverse effects on the economy, health, and social life of the people.
