The British government relies on statistics, but it faces many challenges in this area. From weak economic growth to pressured household incomes, the recent budget by John Healey, the Chancellor, was filled with disappointing figures about the state of the British economy.
Major Errors in Immigration Statistics
Immigration statistics to the UK were calculated for years through the International Passenger Survey (IPS). However, between 2012 and 2020, the number of EU nationals entering the country was reported to be 76% (93,000 people per year) lower than the actual figure. This error was only identified after testing a new approach to calculating immigration that placed less emphasis on the IPS.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) now uses a new approach that includes data from the Home Office, information from the Department for Work and Pensions, and tax receipts. However, in the year ending June 2023, this statistic was still incorrect by 234,000 people.
Challenges in Labor Force Assessment
Labor force statistics and the number of unemployed youth are also calculated using the Labor Force Survey (LFS), which faces challenges. From 2019 to 2024, the LFS lost 1 million workers in identification, as full-time workers are less likely to respond to surveys. This agency has also stated that this survey is not reliable enough to measure productivity.
Laura Gilbert, who was the data science lead at Number 10 Downing Street until last year, says that immigration and labor statistics have a direct impact on economic forecasts and inflation. She warned that if politicians make decisions based on preliminary numbers, they may cite incorrect figures.
Ben Warner, who established the data science unit at Downing Street, believes that the LFS cannot accurately measure the number of entrepreneurs entering the country, making departmental decision-making difficult.
Economic and social statistics in the UK, especially regarding the cost of living and economic growth, are of great importance. However, serious errors in these statistics can negatively impact economic decisions.
