Calvin Penney (played by Josh Hartnett) turns off his boat's engine in the final season of Below, far from the shore. The back of his boat, High Hopes, carries an iceberg the size of a church. Calvin looks at the iceberg and speaks to the creature that is stuck to its base. Referring to the fears he has had about this creature all his life, he says, “We are more alike than I thought.”

Bitter Truth and Human Threats

This confession is a turning point in the story that occurs after five episodes of fear and tension in this six-part Netflix series. The story begins with a family that carries their home in a Newfoundland bay until something pulls it underwater. Calvin, a widowed fisherman with three children, encounters an unknown creature that affects his hometown, Snook's Arm, along with marine biologist Fonda Howander (played by Mackenzie Davis).

Family and Environmental Changes

In the previous episode, Calvin discovers a truth: the mining permit belonging to the Croker family, who are seeking to extract cobalt and copper from beneath Snook's Arm. On the same day, Fonda finds a living creature in the harbor's ice. The creature is recognized as a mother, and the iceberg is her nest. These two discoveries propel the series to its conclusion. The creature they have been fleeing from for five episodes is actually a refugee, and those who were introduced as rescuers are the real threat.

In this episode, Fonda and Calvin are trying to save the creature and their families while Snook's Arm is rapidly emptying and the army is evacuating residents from the area. Fonda, who is holding a memorial for one of her colleagues, realizes that the sea creature is highly intelligent and likely the last of its kind. She firmly tells the authorities that this creature must be studied, not quickly eradicated.
