The U.S. has withdrawn its B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford in Britain, a move made in response to security concerns stemming from a suspected terrorist plot. This issue exacerbates the existing tensions in the close relationship between Britain and the United States.

Withdrawal of Bombers and Security Concerns

The Pentagon confirmed on Sunday that all B-1 bombers stationed at RAF Fairford for defensive operations against Iran have been returned to the United States. This decision comes as British counter-terrorism agencies are investigating a suspected terrorist plot believed to be linked to Tehran.

Position of Britain and the U.S.

The British government emphasized on Monday that the base is secure, but did not directly respond to the U.S. decision to withdraw the bombers. Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, stated in response to media questions that the United States is confident in the security of its bases, but did not directly link these movements to the investigations regarding the terrorist plot.

These developments are specifically related to the increasing dissatisfaction of the Donald Trump administration regarding Britain's defense spending. Washington has been angered by Britain's failure to send warships to the Middle East to assist in the maritime blockade of Iran.

Military and Financial Challenges

Britain has yet to outline a path to meet NATO's standard of spending 3.5% of GDP on defense by 2035. Additionally, the country has been sidelined from a NATO subgroup led by Elbridge Colby, the Pentagon's policy director.

Colby has recently expressed dissatisfaction with the British government, stating that the long history of cooperation between the two countries will continue, but Britain must explain to its people why it needs to spend more on defense.

In May, Britain raised the terrorism threat level to "severe" and announced that the country is experiencing a gradual increase in terrorist threats. These threats include attacks against Iranian dissidents and the Jewish population of the country.

The Pentagon has emphasized that the bombers remain "ready to conduct global precision operations," but their withdrawal from the British base will complicate any further military action against Iran.
