Elina Valtonen, the Foreign Minister of Finland, and Penny Wong, the Foreign Minister of Australia, addressed the challenges facing the United Nations in a joint statement and emphasized the need for serious reforms in this institution. They stated that despite criticisms of the UN's effectiveness, this institution still holds significant importance in maintaining global peace and security.

The Vital Role of the UN in Today's World

The Foreign Ministers of Finland and Australia asserted that the UN, as the only global institution where all countries are represented, plays a crucial role in managing crises and preventing conflicts. They noted that this institution has contributed to the advancement of humanity for over 80 years and has been effective in preventing wars and resolving humanitarian crises.

Elina Valtonen pointed out that the UN is currently facing serious challenges, including increasing geopolitical competition and violations of international laws. She added that if the UN fails to perform its duties effectively, the consequences for global security and stability will be severe.

The Need for Reforms in the Structure of the UN

Penny Wong also highlighted the importance of reforms in the UN Security Council, stating that this council must be able to respond to crises in a timely and effective manner. She emphasized that small countries and middle powers should be active in this process and seize opportunities to influence global policies.

In this regard, Australia has taken steps to strengthen the Geneva Conventions and has signed a declaration for the protection of humanitarian workers in crisis-affected areas. This initiative, with the participation of 130 countries, more than two-thirds of UN member states, aims to create greater accountability and safer access to crisis zones.

Finland is also working to enhance the UN's capacity in peace mediation and support for peace processes. Valtonen and Wong believe that the UN's unique role as a trusted convenor and source of expertise makes it essential for leadership.

Ultimately, the Foreign Ministers of Finland and Australia emphasized that the success of the UN in the future depends on its effectiveness in preventing wars and crises and that it must respond more seriously to global issues.
