This election will determine who the next mayor of Berlin will be. In this poll, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) follows with 20 percent, and the far-right party "Alternative for Germany" (AfD) is in third place with 18 percent.
Challenges of the Berlin Elections
Berlin, as a city-state with a population of 3.9 million, is known for its cultural diversity, but it is also highly divided. While central areas of Berlin typically vote for the Green Party or the Left Party, the outskirts of the city, which make up the majority of the population, are under the control of the CDU and, in some areas, the AfD. This situation has made predicting the outcomes of the Berlin elections difficult.

Lukas Krieger, the CDU Secretary General in Berlin, believes that the elections in this city are particularly challenging for conservative parties like the CDU due to its political diversity. He states, "Berlin is specifically challenging" and emphasizes that the situation in Berlin differs from that of the entire country or the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
Election Competitions and Candidates
With the current mayor, Kai Wegner, not running for re-election, a new candidate named Stefan Urs has been introduced, presenting new challenges for the CDU. Urs now has to navigate between various political threats, including the AfD and the Left Party. In contrast, his main rival, Elif Eiralp, a lawyer and Munich native, faces similar challenges.
Polls show that none of the main mayoral candidates are particularly well-known, and about half of Berliners have no strong opinions about them. This could impact the election process and benefit other parties.
Given the current circumstances, the Left Party is recognized as the only moderate left party that is unwilling to cooperate with the CDU. This situation allows the Left Party to act as a reasonable option for voters. However, the Left Party is also facing criticism regarding anti-Semitic claims, especially after an election event where a rapper shouted controversial slogans.
