Florence Parly, the French Minister of Armed Forces, announced alongside her German counterpart, Boris Pistorius, near Bordeaux that the main project of the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) remains relevant. Pistorius also emphasized this by saying, "I can fully agree with you, dear Florence. The MGCS project is not finished, it is not dead, and it has not been stopped by anyone."
Challenges of the MGCS Project
These statements come as General Fabien Mandon, the Chief of Defense Staff of France, has informed parliamentarians that Germany has withdrawn from the project. These remarks were made particularly in an inappropriate context as the German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, is currently on an official visit to France. Following these statements, Mandon attempted to retract in a written statement, claiming that the project has only been delayed and postponed to the 2040s.

Defense Cooperation between France and Germany
In recent years, defense industrial projects between France and Germany have repeatedly faced failures. The MGCS project, which includes companies like KNDS France, KNDS Germany, Rheinmetall, and Thales, has been halted due to years of delays, industrial disputes, and political tensions. Reports in June indicate that France and Germany are likely to build separate tanks. However, Pistorius recently stated that the two countries will continue to collaborate on "unmanned systems and automated processing."
These challenges clearly reflect the tensions in defense relations between Paris and Berlin, and an increasing number of French parliamentarians are now calling for Paris to seek other partners. One French representative involved in defense policy expressed concern over the state of defense cooperation with Germany, stating, "Defense cooperation with Germany is at its lowest level, as Germany acts unilaterally."
This situation poses a significant issue for the future of defense cooperation in Europe and highlights the need for deeper examinations in this area. Given the challenges that defense industrial projects face, decisions for further cooperation could have profound impacts on the security and military power of both countries.
