The U.S. Treasury Department announced that as part of the country's new campaign to intensify economic pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran, it held a special meeting with the participation of international financial institutions to explore ways to identify and block revenue flows and supply networks related to the Iranian government.

Information Exchange Meeting

The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network of the U.S. Treasury announced on Wednesday that it held an "information exchange" meeting with global financial institutions and relevant entities. According to the Treasury Department, this meeting is part of the "economic exclusion operation" aimed at limiting Iran and its proxy groups' access to international financial resources.

In a statement issued by the department, Scott Basset, the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, said: "The Treasury Department is continuing to cut off every remaining economic artery for Tehran." He added that financial institutions, alongside the U.S. government, support this operation, and the Treasury will continue to work closely with the private sector to counter the Iranian government.

Key Information on Financial Networks

According to the statement from the U.S. Treasury Department, the meeting on Wednesday provided financial institutions with information about "key points, facilitators, and networks" that, according to Washington, allow the Islamic Republic and its proxy groups access to banking relationships in the U.S. The Treasury emphasized that these networks are used for money laundering, arms purchases, and financing terrorist activities in the region.

During the meeting, Treasury officials and representatives of financial institutions discussed methods to counter these networks, their findings, and ways to protect the U.S. financial system from financial abuses and terrorism. The Treasury has asked financial institutions to keep their information updated regarding the risks posed by the financial activities of the Islamic Republic, its proxy groups, and the networks facilitating these activities.

The department also requested that financial institutions review alerts and analytical reports from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network regarding the illegal financing of the Islamic Republic and the sanctions related to this government enforced by the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the Treasury.

This meeting was held as part of the U.S. government's cooperation program with the private sector to counter Iranian financial networks. The Treasury reminded that a meeting titled "Public-Private Partnership for Maximum Pressure and Countering Terrorism Against Iran" was also held in April 2025.

The "Financial Crimes Enforcement Network Information Exchange Program" is a voluntary cooperation mechanism between the government and the private sector that brings together law enforcement agencies and financial institutions to combat money laundering and financial crimes, including terrorism financing. This program began in 2017 and gained legal status under the Anti-Money Laundering Act of 2020.

The U.S. Treasury emphasized in its statement that cooperation with the private sector and information exchange is a crucial part of the "economic exclusion operation" to prevent the financial capabilities of Iran and its related networks from being rebuilt.
