Starlink, the satellite internet system developed by Elon Musk, is recognized as an effective solution for addressing internet access issues in various parts of the world. This system is especially utilized in critical conditions and war zones, becoming an important tool for armies and protest movements.
Application of Starlink in the Ukraine War
Since the onset of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine in February 2022, Starlink has become one of the vital communication tools for the Ukrainian armed forces. This system helps Ukrainian forces coordinate their units, control drones, and utilize unmanned ground systems. In the civilian sector, hospitals, emergency services, and energy suppliers benefit from this system.

However, the heavy reliance of Ukrainian forces on Starlink during service disruptions has become evident. In mid-October, Ukrainian army units reported data transmission disruptions that hindered military operations. Elon Musk stated that speed and usage limits of Starlink are determined by the U.S. military and ultimately by the President of the United States.
Use of Starlink in Iran and Other Countries
In early January 2026, nationwide protests began in Iran against the regime, and the government's harsh response included cutting off internet access across the country. Reports indicate that thousands of Starlink devices were illegally smuggled into Iran and sold on the black market. This has allowed protest movements to effectively continue coordinating demonstrations and bypass government censorship.
The Iranian government has severely cracked down on the use of these services, with Mohammad Amin Aghamiri, the Secretary of the Supreme Council of Cyberspace, describing Starlink as a "war tool." The use of these services is strictly prohibited, and violators face heavy penalties.
In Sudan, militia groups such as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) use Starlink to communicate and coordinate with their forces. In Venezuela, this system has also been used to circumvent information restrictions and ensure internet access. Following the unrest in Venezuela, Elon Musk provided one month of free internet for the country.
Since July 2024, Starlink has been used in the Gaza Strip for humanitarian purposes. Relief organizations and field hospitals utilize this system to facilitate medical aid and logistical coordination.
The impact of Starlink in war-torn and crisis areas highlights the power of Elon Musk and SpaceX. This system not only serves as a communication tool but also acts as a determining factor in diplomacy and global policies. Environmental criticisms also point to this system, as satellites have a short lifespan and can lead to damage to the ozone layer and climate change.
