As a result of a collision between two trains in Giza Governorate, Egypt, at least four people lost their lives and 88 others were injured. This incident occurred on Sunday when one train collided with the rear of another. The accident took place on the Cairo to the southern city of Aswan train route.
Details of the Collision and Rescue Efforts
According to reports, one of the trains derailed after the collision, and several of its carriages overturned. Local authorities reported that 52 ambulances were dispatched to the accident site, which is located about 52 kilometers (32 miles) south of Cairo. Additionally, rescue teams and cranes are working to clear the railway line and restore rail traffic in the El-Ayyat area of Giza.
Investigations and Aftermath of the Incident
The exact cause of the collision is still unknown. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the President of Egypt, announced in a social media post that he has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and has asked government agencies to hold anyone who was negligent in this accident accountable.
This collision occurred in the same area where the worst rail disaster in Egypt's history, the train fire in 2002, took place, claiming over 370 lives. Additionally, several other accidents in this area in 2009 resulted in many casualties.
In recent years, Egypt has invested billions of dollars in new road and high-speed rail projects, but it still faces safety issues and frequent accidents while trying to modernize its aging rail network.
