The Trump administration announced this week that it has revoked Biden-era regulations aimed at protecting LGBTQ students. This new action is part of the administration's ongoing efforts to undermine the rights of transgender individuals, especially as elections approach. While this attack on the rights of trans students is unnecessary and cruel, the reality is that this revocation does not change existing laws.
Title IX and Support for Trans Students
Title IX, enacted in 1972, recognizes the prohibition of sex discrimination in schools and encompasses all aspects of discrimination in education, including classrooms, teacher's lounges, and athletic fields. In 2024, the Biden administration took significant steps to ensure full support for LGBTQ students. Although these regulations were insufficient in some cases, they included comprehensive rules to prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation and transgender status.

Social Impacts and Consequences
The Trump administration's new operations to revert the 2020 regulations issued under former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos do not change current standards in any way and do not diminish the legal rights of LGBTQ students. However, this action is viewed as a cruel and unnecessary move that disregards the importance of legal protections for LGBTQ students and the dignity of trans youth.
Specifically, statistics show that LGBTQ students typically face higher rates of discrimination in schools. A recent survey of 2,800 LGBTQ students revealed that 68% had been bullied because of their transgender status, and 62% had been attacked due to their sexual orientation. This survey also indicated a significant increase in "hostility, intimidation, and harassment" following the 2024 elections.
As the Trump administration continues its relentless attacks, the importance of supporting LGBTQ students in schools is felt more than ever. Undoubtedly, vulnerable youth groups are now in a more politically and discriminatory hostile environment, and attention must be directed to local and state authorities responsible for their protection.
