The Trump administration has signed a new law for economic sanctions against Russia, aimed at punishing and pressuring Moscow for its ongoing war in Ukraine.

Details of the Sanctions

This sanctions package was signed by the President of the United States after being overwhelmingly approved by Congress. The law passed the Senate with a vote of 86 to 11 and the House of Representatives with a vote of 262 to 159. The sanctions include targeting Russian officials and key sectors of the Russian economy, including banks and shadow tanker fleets that transport Russian energy.

Economic and Political Impacts

The law also allows Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on five major countries importing oil or natural gas from Russia. However, some countries will be exempt from these tariffs. The President of the United States can also impose sanctions on five countries that assist Russia in circumventing energy sanctions. These measures could put pressure on U.S. trade relations with China and India, both of which purchase large amounts of Russian oil.

Reactions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Trump for signing the law and expressed gratitude to all senators and House members who supported it. Zelensky stated in a message: "The best way to honor the memory of Lindsey Graham is to fully and swiftly implement the provisions of this law." Graham, who played a significant role in advancing this law, was a strong supporter of Ukraine and had recently returned from the country before his sudden passing in July.

Before the signing of this law, Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Kremlin, warned that additional U.S. sanctions could disrupt efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution in Ukraine.
