Trump and Xi Jinping met for several hours at the White House on Thursday. This meeting took place before a state dinner attended by some of the biggest names in artificial intelligence. During the meeting, Trump expressed satisfaction with the discussions, saying: "We had a great meeting." He also praised Xi for his expertise in rocks and his interest in granite.

Topics of Discussion

The sessions began with short speeches by Trump and Xi in the grand lobby of the White House. After that, the two leaders reviewed military matters in the Rose Garden and spent hours discussing various issues. Trump continued the meeting by accompanying Xi on a tour of part of the White House. Both leaders mentioned artificial intelligence in their opening speeches, with Xi emphasizing the importance of developing artificial intelligence under human control.

International Issues and Diplomacy

According to Chinese state media, Xi referred to the issue of Iran during this meeting and expressed hope that the United States and Iran would resume their negotiations. He also emphasized that China would support both countries in committing to the 14-point memorandum of understanding that was signed a few months ago.

Regarding Taiwan, Xi stated that he hopes the United States will adhere to its position on Taiwan's independence. The United States has not officially recognized Taiwan's independence but has previously sold weapons to the island and is recognized as a key player in the event of a Chinese attack on Taiwan.

Xi also called for greater cooperation between the two countries and, during his speech, invited 100,000 American students to travel to China for cultural exchange in the next five years. He also announced the sending of two pandas to the Atlanta Zoo in the coming days, stating: "China and the United States must maintain a line of non-conflict and non-confrontation, and we can certainly find the right path for the two great countries on this planet."

This is the first time a Chinese leader has made a second official visit to the United States. Xi's last official visit to Washington was in September 2015 at the invitation of Barack Obama, three years after he took office as General Secretary of the Communist Party of China.

Trump and Xi first met in 2017 at Mar-a-Lago, Florida. Their last meeting was in May during Trump's two-day visit to Beijing, where the two delegations discussed various topics including tariffs and rare earth trade. During this visit, the two leaders announced that they would establish a new trade council to reduce tariffs on products deemed not a threat to national security.
