The United States government has announced that Russia and Ukraine have reached an agreement to stop attacks on each other's energy infrastructure. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, wrote on his social media on Sunday: "Immediately, an energy ceasefire has been established in the war between Russia and Ukraine."

Mutual Agreement and Call for Caution

Trump continued: "Both sides have agreed" and urged Kyiv and Moscow to refrain from any violations of this agreement. However, no immediate confirmation has been released from Moscow regarding this. Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, said just minutes after Trump's post that this ceasefire is "new news for me."

Zelensky's Positions and Ongoing Tensions

On Sunday, Zelensky reiterated his position that Ukraine would cease attacks on Russian oil refineries if the Kremlin reduces its energy attacks. Trump and Zelensky had a disagreement earlier this week over Ukraine's attacks on Russian diesel facilities, with Trump stating that these attacks have contributed to the global diesel shortage.

On Friday, Trump announced that he had signed a controversial agreement with Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, to purchase diesel from Russia. This move was aimed at reducing high fuel prices ahead of the upcoming midterm elections in the United States next month. However, this action contradicts new sanctions that Trump had signed just a few weeks earlier to limit Russia's energy revenues to finance the war.

Russia has repeatedly attacked Ukraine's energy facilities, including power plants and transmission lines in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa, to lower civilian morale, especially during the winter months. Recently, Ukraine has conducted long-range attacks deep into Russian territory, targeting oil facilities and other infrastructure to reduce Moscow's refining and fuel supply capacity.

On Sunday, Kyiv continued its attacks against Russian infrastructure, targeting a data center owned by the Russian tech giant Yandex. This was the third attack on this company's facilities in the past four days.

This is a developing story, and more updates will be released soon.
