The Donald Trump administration is facing increasing criticism from within the Republican Party due to its plan to import diesel fuel from Russia. These concerns have arisen due to a violation of a law passed in 2022 that bans Russian oil imports.
Criticism of Trump's Decision
Republican lawmakers have argued that Trump's decision to allow Russian diesel imports into the U.S. "directly contradicts that law" and have raised concerns about the lack of congressional oversight over this decision. They emphasized that the administration had no consultation with Congress and provided no explanation for this decision. One representative stated, "The United States should not be financially supporting [Vladimir] Putin while Russia continues to massacre Ukrainian civilians. The administration must change its decision immediately."

Details of the Diesel Agreement
On Friday, Trump announced that he had signed an agreement with Putin to supply 300,000 tons of diesel to American and global markets "immediately." This move is part of the administration's efforts to reduce energy prices for Americans, which have risen since the onset of the Iran war in February. The increase in diesel prices has challenged the loyalty of some of Trump's supporting groups, and farmers have reported negative impacts on their daily operations.
Following this agreement, Trump claimed on Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had "agreed" to an "immediate" energy ceasefire. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Monday that Russian attacks, which resulted in several deaths and dozens of injuries, included strikes on energy facilities.
Lawmakers' Reactions and New Proposals
American lawmakers opposed to Trump's diesel plan have warned against trusting Putin. Senator Tillis expressed concern on a television program that this agreement could endanger American lives. He also emphasized that this agreement may conflict with a law passed four years ago.
Meanwhile, Republican Representative Brian Fitzpatrick from Pennsylvania announced that he intends to introduce a bipartisan bill to prevent the lifting of sanctions on Russian oil. He stated, "We will introduce a bipartisan bill to prevent any purchases of Russian oil called the 'Peace Through Strength Act of Ronald Reagan.'"
In contrast, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessenet defended the agreement, emphasizing that the deal with Russia is conducted through existing legal channels. Senator John Barrasso from Wyoming also supported the agreement, stating that the President "must make tough decisions."
Zelensky described Trump's initial announcement as a "gift to Putin" and stated that reducing sanctions on Russia represents a "clear weakness" that allows Russia to continue its killings and prolong the war.
