Germany has responded negatively to the request of Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, to replace Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, and has declared its full support for Zelensky. Johan Wadeful, the German Foreign Minister, emphasized at his party's leadership conference that Berlin will assist Zelensky in carrying out his difficult duties.

Germany's positions towards Ukraine and Russia

As the largest donor in the European Union to Ukraine, Germany has consistently supported strict sanctions against Russia and has called for increased pressure on Moscow to end the war in Ukraine. Wadeful stated that Germany needs to increase pressure on Vladimir Putin to compel him to negotiate. These positions are taken while Trump, after a lengthy call with Putin, has announced a reduction of sanctions on Russia and is seeking to blame Zelensky for rising global oil prices.

Challenges for the Christian Democratic Union

Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany and leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), is currently facing serious challenges regarding the leadership of the party. After recent electoral defeats, the party is seeking new ways to regain voters and improve its standing among the public. Merz has addressed issues related to the daily lives of citizens, including living costs, security, and immigration at a two-day conference.

The CDU also needs to answer the question of how to deal with the far-right party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD). This party recently succeeded in securing over 40 percent of the votes in the Saxony-Anhalt state elections, which is a serious warning for the CDU. Merz believes that the only effective response to right and left extremists is the implementation of reforms and the revitalization of the economy.

On the other hand, Germany has recently rejected a proposal for a new European Union budget presented by Ireland. Merz has stated that this proposal needs to be further reduced for an agreement to be reached. As the largest net contributor to the EU budget, Germany is calling for hundreds of billions of euros in cuts to the new budget.
