Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has suspended the implementation of some new sanctions against Russia that were recently approved by the U.S. Congress due to the war in Ukraine, using his presidential powers.
Reasons for Suspending Sanctions
In an executive order issued on Friday evening, Trump announced that the suspension of part of these sanctions is in line with U.S. "national interests." He had signed the sanctions bill into law in September, and these sanctions were set to take effect on Sunday.

This action comes just days after Trump announced that the U.S. would import Russian diesel to lower energy prices domestically ahead of the midterm elections in November. These elections will determine which party will control Congress.
Reactions to Trump's Decision
The plan to import diesel from Russia has surprised many U.S. lawmakers and has faced opposition from both the Republican and Democratic parties. According to the Russia sanctions law, primarily supported in Congress by Senator Lindsey Graham, tariffs of up to 100 percent would be imposed on all Russian exports to the U.S., including crude oil and gas.
This law also targets any country that knowingly purchases oil or gas from Russia 30 days after the law's enactment. Additionally, sanctions against Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, and senior officials of his government have also been proposed.
On Thursday, a group of 20 U.S. lawmakers from both parties sent a letter to Trump urging him to adhere to this law and implement it fully. They emphasized that full enforcement of the law could play a decisive role in compelling Vladimir Putin to take peace negotiations seriously.
The suspension of sanctions against Russia comes a week after Donald Trump announced that the U.S. had agreed to buy diesel from Russia to reduce global energy prices. This agreement has been met with criticism and concerns from U.S. allies.
