The UK Energy Minister, Michael Shinks, announced at the annual Labour Party conference in Liverpool that the country is constantly facing threats to its energy infrastructure. He stated that in today's world, given the insecure conditions, these threats are felt more than ever.
Threats from War and Sabotage
Shinks highlighted the importance of energy infrastructure in his speech, noting that wars, especially in Ukraine, have shown that these infrastructures can become weapons in the hands of enemies. He also warned that the UK's critical infrastructure, including gas pipelines, is at risk of sabotage from Russia and other hostile powers.

Increasing Cyber Threats
The UK Energy Minister added that cyber threats are also on the rise, and the government is working to protect energy infrastructure in collaboration with the industry. Shinks emphasized that cybersecurity threats have become one of the major issues, and necessary actions to address them are underway.
In a strategic defense review published last year at the request of the government of Keir Starmer, officials warned that enemies are increasingly prepared to threaten the free flow of critical goods such as food and energy. This could put the UK and its allies at risk.
Earlier this year, John Healy, former Defense Minister and now Chancellor under Prime Minister Andy Burnham, announced that Russian submarines have been conducting covert operations near the UK's underwater infrastructure. These statements have added to the existing concerns about the security of the country's energy infrastructure.
Shinks also stated that the number of threats against the UK's energy infrastructure is greater than ever, emphasizing the need for readiness to counter these dangers. He concluded by saying that the government will continue its efforts to protect the infrastructure.
