Ukraine launched an attack on an oil terminal in St. Petersburg on Sunday morning, which Russian state media described as "one of the largest drone attacks of the year."

Details of the Attack

Alexander Beglov, the governor of St. Petersburg, announced on Telegram that the city was under a "massive" attack from Ukrainian drones. He added: "The Ministry of Emergency Situations is extinguishing the fire at the St. Petersburg oil terminal, the Ruchi oil depot, and industrial warehouses in the Kolpino area." According to Beglov, one person has died in the incident and several others have been injured.

Rising Tensions Between Ukraine and Russia

This attack comes as Kyiv and Moscow are intensively targeting each other's infrastructure. Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, announced last week that he had ordered the resumption of attacks on Russian oil refineries. This decision came after a three-day pause when former U.S. President Donald Trump announced he had brokered an energy ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.

Trump has repeatedly urged Ukraine to halt its attacks and accused the country of driving up fuel prices while asking Zelensky to step aside as president.

Retaliatory Attacks and Security Concerns

Zelensky tweeted on Sunday about the continuation of Russian attacks on Ukraine, stating: "In total, this week, the Russians have attacked Ukraine with nearly 2,700 drones, 1,700 aerial bombs, and 66 missiles, most of which were ballistic." He also added that the United States must understand that Russia will not take any retaliatory actions in response to the easing of sanctions or agreements.

Separately, Vilnius reported that a suspicious drone may have detonated in Lithuania while flying towards Latvia. A spokesperson for the Lithuanian Armed Forces stated that NATO air defense mission fighters were scrambled in response to this incident near the Latvian border.

Police forces are also searching for unidentified objects in eastern Poland that have entered the airspace of the country following the Russian attack on Ukraine.
