Brazil has recorded the lowest level of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest in nearly 40 years. Data released by Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) shows that from August 2025 to July 2026, 3,335 square kilometers of forest were cleared, marking the lowest level since data collection began in 1988.
42 Percent Reduction in Deforestation
These figures indicate a nearly 42 percent reduction compared to last year, when 5,731 square kilometers of forest were lost. The Amazon, as the largest tropical rainforest in the world and one of its most diverse ecosystems, is largely located in Brazil and also extends to other South American countries like Peru and Colombia.

Brazil's Government Commitment to Environmental Protection
Brazil's Minister of the Environment, João Paulo Capobianco, described this reduction as an "extraordinary decrease" and "like a dream" during a press conference in the capital, Brasília. He emphasized that the Brazilian government's goal is to achieve "zero illegal deforestation" by 2030. Brazil's President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, announced on social media platform X that the figures released today represent a historic achievement.
Márcio Astrini, executive secretary of the environmental advocacy group Observatorio do Clima, stated, "These figures place Brazil at the forefront of the forest conservation agenda and show the world that with political will, it is possible to stop chainsaws and reduce greenhouse gas emissions."
Observatorio do Clima stated that these figures are the result of a "continuous commitment" to environmental protection by the government, which has introduced more oversight and stricter penalties for illegal logging.
Political Implications
This news comes ahead of the second round of presidential elections on October 25 between Lula and conservative senator Flávio Bolsonaro, with polls indicating a close race. This reduction in deforestation may have a positive impact on Brazil's global image as well as on the election outcomes.
