Vladimir Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, thanked the United States for approving the sale of 500 PAC-3 Patriot missiles to counter Russian ballistic missiles, but at the same time called for an acceleration in their delivery. In his Facebook post, he wrote that a multi-year timeline for the start of delivery is far too long for Ukraine's urgent needs.
Ukraine's Urgent Need for Patriot Missiles
Zelensky emphasized in this post: "Deliveries may not begin for several years." He urged his American counterparts to find a solution that would make the PAC-3 Patriot missiles quickly available in times of real danger and urgent need. The Patriot missiles are considered a vital defensive tool for Ukraine against Russian ballistic missiles, especially given concerns about an escalation of Moscow's attacks on energy facilities and the creation of winter blackouts in Ukraine.
Consequences of Missile Delivery
Zelensky also noted that the immediate delivery of Patriot missiles could help Ukraine protect its energy infrastructure during the winter season. He stated: "Providing these missiles to Ukraine now – in the winter of 2026-2027 – and replenishing the arsenals of our allies in the following years would be the right approach."
The United States' decision to sell Patriot missiles reflects an improvement in relations between the White House and Kyiv after recent tensions. However, the White House stated that it would not cover the cost of purchasing these missiles, with the estimated total cost being $2.1 billion, which will be fully funded by allies and foreign partners.
