Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of the Spanish opposition and president of the People's Party, described the border situation in Ceuta as the greatest violation of territorial integrity in recent decades. On July 30, he declared the arrival of at least 80,000 people from Morocco to Ceuta as a challenge for Spain's southern border and consequently, the southern border of Europe, emphasizing that this situation continues and there are no signs of resolution.

Consequences of the Border Crisis

Feijóo stated that a border is not just a line on a map, but represents a political community that determines which values should be protected and which responsibilities should be shared. When a European border is violated, all of Europe becomes weaker. He emphasized that the current Spanish government's response to this crisis is a failure to identify and resolve the problem and must be added to Europe's collective efforts to address this crisis.

Feijóo also referred to the extraordinary conditions in Ceuta and said that this situation should compel us to act. He warned that the continuation of this situation will have dire consequences and will affect sovereignty, citizen security, and the credibility of the European project.

National and European Responsibilities

Feijóo noted that the national responsibility for resolving this crisis lies with the Spanish authorities, who must return all individuals who have entered illegally according to the non-negotiable principle of the European migration and asylum agreement. He clarified that the duty of the Spanish government is not to find accommodation for them, but to prioritize their expedited departure.

He also called for immediate and effective action from all of Europe to identify the failures of the Spanish government and prevent the entrenchment of this crisis. According to Feijóo, the European Union must ensure that Spain properly utilizes all available tools to facilitate returns and must clarify why Morocco itself has officially stated its readiness to take back all those who entered on July 30.

In conclusion, Feijóo emphasized that humanity should not use excuses to avoid action against this crisis. He expressed that the current situation requires serious action to prevent individuals from risking their lives traveling to Europe by sea.
