Andrej Babis, the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic and a populist billionaire, did not win any seats in the recent Senate elections. This election, held on Saturday, was Babis's first electoral test since his victory in the parliamentary elections in October 2025, which returned him to office after four years away from power.
Senate Election Results
Final results from the two-day voting show that candidates affiliated with opposition parties successfully secured 22 out of 27 contested seats in the Senate, maintaining their previous majority. The centrist ANO party (or YES), led by Babis, failed to gain any new seats, reducing its representation in the Senate to 14 members.
Political Implications and Government Plans
Babis reacted to this result by saying, "We certainly did not expect to win any Senate seats in this election." However, he announced that he would continue with his government plans. These plans include an unpopular proposal to revise the funding of the country's public media.
Babis's euroskeptic government has also halted direct military support for Ukraine, which is defending against Russian aggression, and opposes EU policies aimed at combating global warming. Although the lower house of the Czech Parliament plays the main legislative role, the Senate has a significant role in approving constitutional amendments and confirming judges of the Constitutional Court.
The results of the recent Senate elections could have profound implications for Babis and his government, as control of the Senate has been handed over to opposition parties that support Western policies. This shift could affect the process of passing key laws and reforms and present new challenges for Babis.
