Andy Burnham, the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, met with Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, in Berlin and officially launched the new friendship and bilateral cooperation agreement between the UK and Germany that was signed last year by Keir Starmer, the former Prime Minister of the UK.

Contingency Agreement and Its Implications

This agreement, known as the Contingency Agreement, includes a 17-point action plan for closer cooperation in the post-Brexit era. Friedrich Merz called the day of the meeting a historic day and stated that this agreement provides new opportunities for bilateral cooperation, especially for students and young people. He emphasized, "It is important for our younger generation to see how well we Europeans work together and how interdependent we are."

Expressing Concerns and the Need for Cooperation

Burnham also emphasized during the meeting that the Contingency Agreement enhances Europe's security and contributes to the economic growth of both countries. He said, "In challenging times, we need the closest cooperation with our partners, and Germany is truly one of our closest partners."

In addition to these issues, it is worth mentioning the new GCAP project designed for the development of a next-generation military jet. This project has been initiated following the failure of the French-German rival plan to build the FCAS military jet and allows various countries to participate at different levels. Recently, Canada has joined this project as an observer, and Saudi Arabia has also been introduced as a potentially interested party.

In other news, the Left Party, Greens, and Social Democrats (SPD) in Germany have agreed to start exploratory talks to form a coalition government in Berlin. This agreement follows the approval of measures to combat anti-Semitism and organized crime. These parties also emphasized that they will protect the lives of Jews in Berlin and consider the right to the existence of Israel non-negotiable.

The Left Party, as the strongest party in the September 20 elections in Berlin, with 25.7 percent of the votes, hopes to form a coalition with the Greens and SPD, which may see Elif Eralp, currently from the Left Party, appointed as the first mayor of Berlin from this party.

In the latest news, a wax statue of Döner Kebab was unveiled at the Madame Tussauds Museum in Berlin. This kebab is recognized as one of the most popular street foods in Berlin and has a long history in German fast food culture, especially among the Turkish community.

Meanwhile, the Irish company Ryanair has announced that it will offer 700,000 fewer seats on flights to Germany in the upcoming winter season. This reduction is due to high air traffic control and security costs. This issue will particularly affect Berlin Brandenburg Airport, and Ryanair has stated that it will cut half of its services at this airport.
