Magdalena Andersson, the leader of the Social Democratic Party of Sweden, won after the vote counting ended in one of the closest elections in Swedish history. This significantly close election resulted in an outcome that could lead to the formation of a new center-left government. As the former Prime Minister, Andersson now needs the support of three other parties in her left bloc to achieve a majority in Sweden's 349-member parliament.
Challenges in Forming a New Government
The Social Democratic Party, having secured the most seats, reached 176 seats, but Andersson needs to collaborate with other parties to form a cabinet. The two main parties in the left bloc, the Left Party and the Center Party, are currently at odds. The Left Party demands ministerial positions in the government, which the Center Party cannot accept. This disagreement could delay the negotiations for forming a government.

Electoral Consequences and Sweden's Political Future
The recent elections also brought unfavorable results for Ulf Kristersson, the leader of the Sweden Democrats. This far-right party, which hoped to come to power for the first time, lost votes and seats in this election. After the final vote count, Kristersson's party secured only 173 seats, significantly diminishing his hopes of retaining the Prime Minister position.
Given that negotiations to form a government may take weeks, the first opportunity for the new Prime Minister to be sworn in will be on September 29. While Andersson is seen as a strong candidate to lead the new government, the political challenges ahead could impact the cabinet formation process and plunge Sweden into a period of instability.
