The European Parliament has initiated an internal investigation into a fake email that seemingly was authored by a senior legislator of the European People's Party. This email allegedly intended to weaken a colleague's candidacy for a high-ranking group position.

Details of the Fake Email

Andrzej Halicki has stated that the email sent to a media outlet on Thursday was not written by him and has requested that the Belgian authorities investigate the matter. He remarked, "I have been subjected to shameful accusations based on fake emails."

Parliament and Other Legislators' Reactions

A spokesperson for the Parliament has confirmed that their services have verified that this email is not authentic and are in communication with the relevant member to find the best way to investigate this matter and prevent similar occurrences. The email criticized the work of Sebastião Bugalho, a Portuguese EPP legislator, which appears to have aimed at undermining him before the elections for EPP deputy positions. Bugalho's office has stated that he "will undoubtedly not comment on the fake emails."

Investigation Initiated by EPP Group Leader

Pedro López de Pablo, an EPP legislator, has stated that "the group has been informed that an investigation is underway." This investigation was communicated to all EPP group legislators by Manfred Weber, the EPP group leader, in a closed session. Halicki submitted his request for an investigation from the Belgian authorities to the President of the Parliament, Roberta Metsola, on Friday, stating, "As far as I know, the Parliament has reacted swiftly and the investigation has begun."

Ongoing Competitions for EPP Deputy Positions

This email has surfaced amid intense competition for EPP deputy positions, with voting scheduled for Tuesday. Twelve legislators, including Bugalho and Halicki, are competing for 10 positions.
