France and four other European countries reached an agreement in an emergency meeting on Thursday to respond "unanimously" to the increasing pressures from the U.S. government for the release of strategic diesel reserves.

Agreement of European Countries

France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Ireland, along with the European Commission, participated in this meeting to find solutions to counter the pressures from Donald Trump's administration to reduce their oil reserves. These pressures have been accompanied by threats to impose a ban on U.S. diesel exports to European countries.

European officials announced that these countries are also under covert pressures from the United States to reduce their oil reserves, otherwise they will face the risk of a ban on diesel exports from the U.S.

Points of Agreement and Possible Solutions

These countries, along with the European Commission, agreed on three points: responding to pressures with a "coordinated voice", ensuring that any decision regarding the release of reserves must be made at the level of the International Energy Agency (IEA), and efforts to "reduce tensions" in relations with the United States.

The International Energy Agency, headquartered in Paris, coordinates the energy policies of developed countries and has previously overseen the release of oil reserves earlier this year.

The goals of this meeting are to reduce tensions and improve communications with the United States. One news source stated: "We must approach this with both firmness and optimism. When facing a hungry lion, you should not strike it."

A larger group of countries that have received similar pressures from the Trump administration will gather on Friday to discuss how to respond to this situation.

Previous reports suggest that Chris Wright, the U.S. Secretary of Energy, has proposed an alternative: instead of a ban on diesel exports, which the European Union is heavily dependent on, he has called for the release of strategic oil reserves to the market.

Diesel prices in the United States have risen due to the wars in Ukraine and Iran, and pressure on Donald Trump to lower prices is increasing ahead of the midterm elections.

The Trump administration has currently prevented a ban on exports, despite strong opposition from the U.S. oil sector. Trump stated at an event in the White House: "I am looking into this" and added that he has continuously discussed this issue with other members of his cabinet.

These developments reflect the complex challenges European countries face in dealing with U.S. pressures and the need to secure their energy supplies. In this context, coordination and cooperation among these countries can play a vital role in managing tensions and preserving common interests.
