Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, emphasized the importance of strengthening the role of middle countries in Europe and Asia in the context of global changes during his four-day trip to Asian countries. He stated that these countries must secure their interests in an international environment influenced by the competition of great powers.
Emphasis on Security and Stability
Merz noted in his speech that given the unpredictable tariffs imposed under the management of U.S. President Donald Trump, as well as trade restrictions from China, it is essential for Germany and other European countries to act as reference points for stability. He said: "This is a deliberate viewpoint against what is currently happening. We want to act differently and show that there is a better way."
Creating New Trade Agreements
The Chancellor of Germany also emphasized the need to create a new free trade agreement between the European Union and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). This agreement includes 12 countries across five continents. Merz stated: "Under my federal government, investment opportunities will continuously improve." He also announced that during his meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, he observed a high level of trust in Germany and Europe as investment locations.
Alongside these issues, Merz urged European countries to take further efforts to strengthen their security against external threats. He pointed to the threats posed by Russia and called on the defense ministers of Germany, France, Italy, Poland, and the United Kingdom to enhance their military and political cooperation and emphasized the importance of unity in NATO.
Overall, Merz's remarks reflect growing concerns in Europe regarding global uncertainties and the necessity for greater cooperation among middle countries to ensure security and stability in the region.
