Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, has called on the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to maintain discipline in the current crisis. Growing criticism of his leadership has emerged following the party's electoral defeat in Saxony-Anhalt.
Concerns from the Social Democratic Party
Prominent members of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) have also expressed concerns about the internal situation of the CDU. Dilek Kalayci, the parliamentary manager of the SPD, has urged the party to regain its focus and move forward. She added that it is believed "the nerves within the CDU are somewhat frayed" and this situation requires a change in approach.

Simone Müller, the deputy leader of the SPD parliamentary group, stated more explicitly that her party's participation in the coalition does not depend on Merz. These remarks reflect tensions within the governing coalition and growing concerns about the future of Merz's leadership.
Pressure on Merz and Internal Support
Merz announced at a polar policy meeting in Rovaniemi, Finland, that Germany plays a significant role in determining the "destiny of the European continent," especially in terms of security policy. He emphasized that more attention should be paid to international issues to prevent internal tensions.
However, criticism of Merz within the CDU has increased, and some members have openly discussed the possibility of replacing him. Nevertheless, several prominent CDU politicians have supported Merz. Matthias Middelberg, the party's financial policy spokesman, called these discussions "unnecessary" and backed Merz.
Foreign Minister, Johan Wadephol, also stated that Merz can "always rely on the support of his parliamentary and cabinet groups" and described the government's situation as "very stable."
Response from the Green Party
Felix Banazak, one of the leaders of the Green Party, has advised Merz's government to "regain its order and discipline." He expressed concern that rumors about a change in chancellorship are rapidly increasing and urged Merz to fulfill his duties.
Banazak also referred to discussions about minority governments and the potential dismissal of SPD ministers, stating that these discussions indicate that Merz and the CDU leadership have lost control.
IG Metall Protests
The IG Metall union has announced that on September 21, protests will be held at over 200 locations across the country to protest job cuts and other demands from workers in the automotive industry. Christian Benner, the leader of IG Metall, stated that this crisis has largely fallen on the shoulders of the workers.
Benner added that workers have already made sacrifices and are now facing the risk of losing the standard 35-hour workweek. He emphasized that this situation will lead to increased working hours without wage increases, causing significant dissatisfaction among workers.
Finally, Merz also congratulated Alexander Zverev, Germany's tennis champion, on his victory at the US Open, presenting this success as a reason to take pride in the country.
