He intends to gauge their support and demonstrate that he has a plan to improve the situation. Additionally, Merz has canceled his speech at the United Nations General Assembly to focus on the domestic implications of the CDU's performance.
Merz is trying to emphasize the importance of maintaining stability in Berlin during these tense times for Europe. At an election event in Berlin, he stated, "All eyes are on Germany, on Berlin, and on our role in the world." He also noted that expectations for Germany to maintain stability on the European continent are high.
Despite Merz's efforts to maintain his position, the results of the elections on Sunday could be impactful. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, polls suggest that the CDU may only secure 7% of the votes. This situation means approaching the failure to achieve the minimum of 5% of votes required to enter the state parliament, which, according to a current official, could lead to serious crises.
In Berlin, where another election is taking place on the same day, the CDU is slightly trailing behind the leftist party "Die Linke." Poll results indicate that the CDU has 20% support, which is 8% less than its previous election in Berlin. If this trend continues, the CDU may be ousted from the city government it currently leads.
Merz is also continuing his efforts to garner support among state officials. On Wednesday, all eight CDU prime ministers issued a public statement expressing their support for the Chancellor and emphasizing the need for a stable government in Germany.
In this situation, Merz has shown that he is aware of the criticisms directed at him and is gradually trying to improve his communication with voters. In this regard, he has responded positively to long-standing requests from state officials to reduce fuel costs and has also changed his positions on retirement age limits.
