The National Rally party led by Marine Le Pen successfully won 15 seats in the recent Senate elections, enabling this far-right party to form a group in the Senate. This historic victory signifies an increase in the representation of this party in leadership roles and committees within this legislative body.
Details of the National Rally's Victory
The National Rally increased its seats from three to 15 in this election, allowing them to surpass the threshold of 11 seats needed to form a group in the Senate. Half of the senators in this chamber are elected every three years by around 42,000 local officials.
Marine Le Pen, who is recognized as the frontrunner in the polls for next year's presidential election, announced in a message on social media platform X that the new Senate group will serve as a "fundamental platform throughout the presidential campaign" for her party.
National Rally's Commitment to Democracy
On the other side of the political spectrum, the Unyielding Left Movement led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon also succeeded in securing a seat in this chamber for the first time. These two victories indicate new developments in French politics and changes in the country's political power structure.
However, the Senate will still be under the control of a coalition of lawmakers from the Republicans party and a centrist group, although this bloc lost several seats in this election.
A centrist senator who wished to remain anonymous stated that the National Rally's victory in forming a group is the "culmination of their stabilization in the political arena." He added, "The majority [centrist] will not change, and our work will ensure stability. If anyone wants to harm the institutions, we will be the ones to guarantee stability."
These developments in the Senate elections not only grant the National Rally more power but will also impact the political landscape of France, especially with the upcoming presidential elections in 2024.
