Ilse Aigner, the current President of the Bavarian Parliament, has been introduced as the candidate for the Presidency of Germany. Reports indicate that the CDU party is planning to nominate Aigner as their presidential candidate. This decision was made following internal support for Aigner and a meeting scheduled for Saturday and Sunday in Berlin.
Background of Ilse Aigner
Ilse Aigner, 61, began her political career in the Bavarian Parliament in 1994 and then moved to the Federal Parliament of Germany (Bundestag) in 1998. She returned to the Bavarian Parliament in 2013. Aigner also served as the Federal Minister of Agriculture in Angela Merkel's government for five years. As a Roman Catholic, single and childless, she was born into a family with four older sisters.
Support from Political Parties
According to published information, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) has also announced that it will support Aigner's nomination proposal. Lars Klingbeil, the head of the SPD, said at an event in Berlin: "If the CDU leadership committee officially introduces Ilse Aigner on Monday, we welcome and support this move." Given the current composition of the special committee, which consists of representatives from the Bundestag and state representatives, Aigner has a good chance of success in the presidential election.
The presidential election in Germany is scheduled for January 30, 2027, and if elected, Aigner will make history as the thirteenth President of Germany and the first woman in this position. The current president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, is nearing the end of his second five-year term.
