Internet access in the Tigray region of Ethiopia has been cut off due to escalating conflicts. This internet shutdown comes as fighting has sharply increased, calling into question the 2022 peace agreement between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).

History of the conflicts

The Tigray region witnessed a bloody war from 2020 to 2022 that severed its connection with the outside world and left hundreds of thousands in conditions resembling famine. Reports indicate that this war has reignited, and the security situation in the region has become extremely critical.

Reports suggest that network data indicates a regional disruption in northern Ethiopia, consistent with reports of telecommunication service outages in Tigray. The exact cause of this disruption is unclear, and residents of the area report emergency conditions in the markets.

Feelings of fear and concern among residents

Residents of Tigray express severe concerns about shortages of essential goods and services. Some have made emergency purchases due to fears of another disruption in banking, telecommunications, and electricity services. A local resident stated that there is deep fear in the community, and people are worried about facing difficult conditions again.

The Tigray People's Liberation Front has recently taken control of the airports in the Tigray region and has clashed with government forces in the neighboring Afar and Amhara regions. This group has declared that it has entered a "full-scale war" with the Addis Ababa government. Additionally, this group has formed an anti-government coalition with Fano militants in Amhara and five other armed groups.

In the 2022-2023 war, Fano fought alongside the federal government against the Tigray rebels. The Tigray People's Liberation Front ruled Ethiopia from 1991 to 2018 and was sidelined with the rise of Abiy Ahmed, the current Prime Minister.

This state of emergency in Tigray could have serious repercussions for the residents of this region and for security in other areas of Ethiopia. Given the history of conflicts and humanitarian crises in this country, there is an urgent need for attention and humanitarian action.
