Lula Inácio da Silva, the President of Brazil, reacted to the interventions of Donald Trump, the President of the United States, in his speech at the UN General Assembly in New York, stating: "Brazil does not belong to anyone." These remarks specifically referred to Trump, who was not present at the session at that time.

Impact of Trump's Interventions

Trump has repeatedly intervened in Brazil's domestic politics, supporting former President Jair Bolsonaro and the right-wing opposition. In July, Trump imposed sanctions on a judge who condemned Bolsonaro for attempting a coup and sentenced him to 27 years in prison. Washington lifted these sanctions only after negotiating with Lula.

Brazilian Presidential Election

Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of Jair Bolsonaro, is Lula's biggest rival in the upcoming presidential election on October 4, and according to polls, the two are in a close race for the second round of voting. This election has garnered significant international attention as it takes place in the largest country in South America. Brazil is recognized as an agricultural power with rich natural resources, including rare earth elements and vast oil reserves.

Foreign Policy and International Relations

Lula is known as a leftist representative of South America and supports multilateral diplomacy, calling for dialogue and trade with all countries. In contrast, Flávio Bolsonaro advocates for forming conservative alliances with the United States and other right-wing countries. However, experts believe that Bolsonaro's victory would not necessarily mean an improvement in relations with the United States.

Robens Reikopro, a diplomat and former minister of Brazil, stated: "Lula has a specific credibility in foreign policy, while Bolsonaro is completely inexperienced." He added that Bolsonaro's victory could threaten Brazil's role in the BRICS group, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Challenges and Brazil's Future

Experts believe that despite its extensive natural resources, Brazil is likely to remain a small player on the global stage, as it lacks the economic and military capacity to assist other countries. However, Brazil can continue to play an important role in the Global South, especially in international discussions related to global governance, new trade conditions, and environmental policies.
