Magdalena Andersson, former Prime Minister of Sweden, is ready to return to power after four years in opposition and intends to use this position to strengthen Europe's standing in a troubled world.

Andersson's Plans for Sweden's Foreign Policy

Andersson is currently in the midst of coalition negotiations to form a left-leaning government, following a narrow election victory against right-wing and far-right parties. In an exclusive interview on election day, she outlined her plan to revise Sweden's foreign policy and strengthen the power of the European Union.

She emphasized, "We need a strong European Union in today's world. With the ongoing war in Ukraine, an unpredictable United States, and a rising China, we truly need a strong European Union." Sweden, with its influential voice in European affairs and strong commitment to free trade, can play a key role in this regard.

Changes in EU Decision-Making

Andersson's main priority is to change the decision-making processes of the European Union, particularly at the European Council summits, which often become fraught with tensions and disagreements. She recalls that during Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, discussions over sanctions faced numerous obstacles. She believes that the "number one issue" for strengthening the EU's voice is whether the 27 leaders of this bloc can "really agree on issues".

Andersson also believes that the use of Russian financial assets, which are stored in a warehouse in Brussels, should be utilized to help cover Ukraine's defense costs. She stated, "We should take them and use them" and considers this a better option than adding to the EU's multiannual budget.

Andersson responded to criticisms from Ulf Kristersson, former Prime Minister and leader of the center-right, emphasizing that her leftist parties are now NATO members and must be active and strong.

She also highlighted the importance of trade and technology as part of Sweden's security and called for closer cooperation with other countries like Japan, Australia, and Canada. She says that to strengthen Europe's position, we need to look more beyond our borders.

Andersson also referred to the need to review the status of British residents living in Sweden and promised to look into this matter. She stated, "This is one of the issues we need to pay attention to. People from Britain have lived here for decades, and some of them have reached old age and can no longer stay."
