Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, is set to address the parliament regarding Germany's priorities in Ukraine, European defense, and economic competition. This speech will take place on October 14, just before the EU leaders' summit in Brussels.

Important Decisions in Brussels

Merz will address significant issues such as aid to Ukraine and the economic situation in Europe during his speech, which will start at 14:05 local time. The EU leaders' summit on Thursday and Friday will include discussions on the Middle East, the EU's long-term budget, and the expansion of the bloc.

Merz will also refer to the reforms being undertaken in Germany's welfare system, emphasizing that these reforms will help younger generations. His speech follows an employers' conference in Berlin where he discussed his reform plans.

Rising Inflation Rate in Germany

Meanwhile, Germany's annual inflation rate rose to 3.3 percent in September, the highest level since December 2023. This increase is attributed to rising energy prices, particularly fuel and heating oil. The Federal Statistical Office of Germany has confirmed this increase and warned about its impact on people's livelihoods.

Gasoline and heating oil prices have risen by 37.1 percent and 74.9 percent, respectively, while electricity and natural gas prices have decreased. These changes are a result of government measures implemented since the beginning of this year.

Trial of Individual Accused of Bombing Nord Stream Gas Lines

The trial of a Ukrainian man named Serhiy K, who allegedly led the operation that resulted in the explosion of the Nord Stream gas lines in 2022, has begun in Hamburg. This individual is facing legal action for war crimes and destruction of infrastructure. The trial is taking place amid signs of public support and protests in favor of Ukraine outside the court.

Serhiy K, who was arrested in Italy last year, has denied any involvement in this operation, and the Ukrainian government has also denied any involvement. While this trial is under intense media scrutiny, its consequences could have profound impacts on international relations.
