Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, referred to the heated political discussions in Berlin during a meeting held in Rovaniemi, Finland, and emphasized the importance of Europe's future. He stated, "I am trying to convince my friends and political party that this issue is much more important than some of our internal political debates."
Political Challenges and Concerning Polls
Merz pointed to the challenges faced by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Public support for the federal government has reached its lowest level, and his party suffered a severe defeat in the recent state elections in Saxony-Anhalt. Polls indicate that the CDU is at risk of not entering the state parliament in the upcoming elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, with only 7% support.
This comes as the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has emerged victorious in the recent Saxony-Anhalt elections and is recognized as a far-right party. Merz had previously promised to "cut AfD support in half," but now his own party is facing declining support.
Merz's Government Trust Crisis
Government officials are openly discussing the lack of trust in Merz's cabinet. Karin Prien, the Minister of Education, stated, "Many people feel that the Chancellor and we in the CDU/CSU lack the necessary empathy. And this needs to change."
Many observers believe that Merz lacks transparency and patience in his communication with the public. For instance, the planned reforms in the pension system, which may create problems for many, seem to be discussed by Merz with a lack of clarity. In July, he criticized citizens' attitudes toward the "four-day work week," considering it a threat to the country's welfare.
The Social Democratic Party, CDU's coalition partner, has also warned about the current concerning situation and has urged Merz to get back on the right track and collaborate with them.
Future Leadership of the CDU
Despite the concerns, there is still no clear option for Merz's succession. Markus Söder, the Prime Minister of Bavaria, has been mentioned as a potential candidate, but he lacks broad support due to his provocative behavior within the party. On the other hand, Hendrik Wüst, the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, who has successfully led a coalition with the Green Party, has yet to show a willingness to move to Berlin.
If there is sufficient support for a leadership change within the ruling coalition, there will be no major challenges in legal procedures. However, if the Chancellor does not voluntarily step down, a "constructive" vote of no confidence will be needed, which currently seems unimaginable.
Chancellors emphasized that Germany now needs "stability" more than ever and must strive to rebuild voter trust through "listening and political action," not personal debates.
