The European Union (EU) is considering options to strengthen economic cooperation with Britain in order to reduce dependence on hostile powers and commercial rivals. Mika Altola, a Member of the European Parliament from the European People's Party and Vice Chair of the Committee on Relations with Britain, announced at the Playbook Live summit in Brussels that the EU is in the conceptual design phase for relations with like-minded partners.
What New Agreements Might Include
Altola further stated that the EU is considering "sectoral" agreements and "some form of market freedom" similar to the Swiss agreement. He emphasized that these views are essential as the EU is under significant external pressures. He said: "We are stuck in a situation and need to make progress."

The Impact of Global Changes on UK-EU Relations
Altola referenced global changes, stating: "The global order is changing. The United States is failing in its war with Iran, and Russia is in a similar situation. Major powers are truly losing their position." These remarks reflect growing concerns about the negative impacts of geopolitical changes on trade and economic relations.
The UK and the EU have long been planning to hold a meeting to resume their relations. Andy Burnham, the Prime Minister of the UK, stated at the United Nations meeting in New York: "Our focus right now is on a meeting between the UK and the EU, which we hope will take place later this year." This meeting could provide an opportunity to reassess relations and reach new agreements.
