The broad front (Frente Amplio), a coalition of several leftist parties in Spain, was unable to reach a national agreement before the November elections. This coalition hoped to include Podemos, which was a government partner from 2020 to 2023. However, as the deadline for forming electoral alliances approached, the parties could not reach a nationwide agreement.

Limited Participation in Elections

Instead, the broad front and Podemos will only participate together in the Canary Islands and the Valencia region. The share of votes for the broad front, which is the dominant force in this coalition, has decreased to less than half since 2023, reaching 5%. While Podemos stands at 3% in the polls, its full participation in the broad front could have meant a larger share of seats for the leftists.

Challenges for the Socialist Party

The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) is currently facing challenges and is trailing behind the conservative People's Party (PP). To maintain the power of Pedro Sánchez, the Prime Minister of Spain, this party needs strong performance from the leftist parties. According to polls, a likely scenario is that the People's Party could form a majority with the far-right Vox party, which is gaining support.

Irène de Miguel, the coordinator of Podemos in the western region of Extremadura, said as the deadline approached, "The left in Spain is caught in a game of thrones that immobilizes voters." This situation reflects serious challenges for leftist parties and the need for greater solidarity against existing political threats.
