Ukraine apologized on Sunday after a suspicious drone crashed in northern Lithuania, causing damage to a moving vehicle. The incident prompted shelter warnings and the dispatch of NATO fighter jets. Lithuanian officials instructed residents in central and northern areas to go to shelters on Sunday morning following the incident.
Details of the Incident and Officials' Actions
After identifying an unidentified flying object, Lithuanian officials issued warnings to residents. Vytautas Vaitkevičius, head of Lithuania's National Crisis Management Center, stated that parts of the drone damaged a civilian vehicle, but fortunately, no one was injured. Following the incident, two Italian Eurofighter jets operating under NATO command were dispatched. According to NATO, weather conditions hindered the visual identification of the flying object.
Concerns About the War's Impact on NATO
This incident has raised new concerns about the expansion of the war between Russia and Ukraine into NATO territory. While investigations are underway regarding the drone's origin and whether it was carrying explosives, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda described the incident as another example of the war's impact on NATO's eastern borders. Lithuania and its Baltic neighbors have experienced several instances of drones entering their airspace during the war.
Previously, Ukrainian drones designed to target areas in northwestern Russia have entered Baltic airspace and crashed. Additionally, Russian-made drones have entered Lithuania from Belarus. These incidents highlight the dangers posed by military conflicts in the region and the challenges related to NATO's border security.
