Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, in her annual speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, addressed the global challenges that have put pressure on Europe and emphasized the need for Europe's economic, military, and technological independence. She pointed out threats such as artificial intelligence and climate change, stating that these issues could lead to the destruction of Europe.
The Necessity of Europe's Independence
In this speech, von der Leyen stated that Europe must choose its own path, saying: "This is a complex era with great possibilities and dangers." Alongside her special guest, Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, she emphasized the importance of solidarity among European countries and stated that the concept of "Europe" now extends beyond the European Union.

The President of the European Commission referred to two specific examples of European solidarity: Ukraine and Greenland, both of which do not belong to the European Union. She said: "Europe must be for Europeans" and added that only this continent can provide true sovereignty for its people.
Everyday Challenges and Green Policies
Von der Leyen also referred to the everyday challenges faced by 450 million EU citizens and emphasized the need to address their concerns. She noted the increasing support for right-wing nationalist parties in major EU countries and attempted to steer voters and politicians towards moderation.
Regarding climate change, she warned that "Europe is warming at twice the global rate" and referred to recent hot summers and wildfires. Von der Leyen announced that the European Commission will present a plan for heat preparedness and public health improvement. Additionally, a new initiative called "Water Initiative" has been proposed to manage water scarcity.
She also highlighted the necessity of managing artificial intelligence and transitioning it from the digital world to the real sectors of the economy and society, stating that this technology will soon be in the hands of adversaries with differing views. Von der Leyen invited advanced artificial intelligence laboratories to discuss how to support industrial efforts in this field.
